Lovage project is a non profit, plant based, low waste, social enterprise and catering company.
Our mission is community regeneration: to provide job opportunities for those in need, to use our business as a way to support marginalised groups and to deliver healthy vegan food to our locals as a way to strengthen community connections. Lovage Project also strives to foster cooperative working, promote sustainability, and carry out community centred mutual aid.
With professional training and experience in food, we make creative and inspired meals, drawing from a range of cuisines and flavours.
We opened in Autumn 2019 in Vauxhall Gardens community centre, providing fresh and affordable plant-based food and drinks to local residents, workers and users of the community space. The centre was popular and active until the first covid lockdown after which we had to close to the public.
During the lockdown we cooked 7700 meals for NHS workers, homeless LGBTQ+ folk, created food boxes for local low-income families and supported street kitchens for the homeless such as Buses For Homeless and Brixton Soup Kitchen.
After the lockdown ended we moved more towards catering, preparing food for local charities and NGO's.
We currently run work experience for young adults on the spectrum, host herbal medicinal workshops and collaborate with local queer groups such as Queer Minds. We would love to do more work with the communities that are part of and important to us!
Our Sustainable Practices:
- We are vegan! Growing or producing plant-based goods generally requires much less land, less water and causes less pollution than many animal products.
- We do not use avocados. The overproduction of avocados to suit food trends has greatly damaged the biodiversity of land surrounding avocado farms across the world. Many avocados that we find in our supermarkets are also on the boycott list as grown in Israel!
- We do not use almond milk. It takes 4.6 litres of water to produce each and every almond.
- We serve tap water to reduce our use of plastic, glass bottled water is available on request.
- All our food is served in plastic-free containers, on reusable platters or in biodegradable boxes.
- We use NEMI Teas, a London based company providing work for refugees. All teabags are plastic-free, the packaging is biodegradable, and the teas are organic and Fairtrade-certified.
- We use Girls Who Grind Coffee, an independent, female-founded specialty coffee roastery who source 100% of their coffees from women producers.
- We sell Gaza Cola, a 100% Palestinian owned company whose profits go towards rebuilding hospitals in Gaza. We are committed to the BDS movement and boycotting all Israeli products.
- We are a London Living Wage employer
